Be honest: when was the last time you read a book? Like an actual book, not a magazine, a blog, or a newspaper. An actual book, like with chapters and stuff?
If you can’t remember, you’re going to want to keep reading (and no, this blog doesn’t count!).
And, if you read all the time, it’s still a good idea to keep reading!
I want to share the benefits of reading and why it’s a great idea to pick up a book on a regular basis.
The Benefits of Reading
These are some of the many benefits of reading every day.
Knowledge is power, and no one can ever take knowledge away from you. No matter what you’re reading – history, romance, science fiction – you’re learning. And you’ll never know when you need to access something from that encyclopedia in your brain.
The more knowledge you have, the better-equipped you’ll be to tackle any challenge that comes at you.
2. Brain Power
Not only does regular reading help build up your stores of knowledge, it can also increase your brain power. Reading improves memory function. This is partly because reading is more neurobiologically demanding than looking at images or listening to speech. There’s even research that suggests it can help prevent the development of Alzheimer’s later in life.
3. Reduced Stress
Have you ever settled down with a book and become lost in the pages? Bet you weren’t thinking about all the stressful things in your life, were you?
A good book can help you forget about your worries, all those thoughts swirling around in your head. Reading can distract you and give you the chance to relax and let the tension drain away.
Tip: There are plenty o other ways to reduce stress. Find some of our favourites right here.
4. Improved Empathy
According to research, reading can make it easier for you to relate to others and read their emotions. This is important when building personal and social relationships, both in the workplace and outside it.
Tip: Fiction is better for this than than non-fiction, so vary your genres.
5. Better Concentration and Focus
Reading every day can help increase focus, concentration, and attention span. That’s because, to understand what you’re reading, you need to focus 100% of your attention on the words on the page.
When you’re fully immersed in a book, you’ll be able to tune out the distractions around you and concentrate on what you’re reading. Doing this on a regular basis builds up those muscles in your brain.
6. Boosts Analytical Thinking Skills
Analytical thinking helps you to gather information, articulate, visualize and solve complex problems. And reading is a great way to boost those skills.
By reading every day, you’re stimulating your brain, building your ability to think critically, view different perspectives, identify patterns, and make connections.
7. Improved Sleep
Reading is a great way to end your day. It simultaneously relaxes and calms the busy mind. Reading before bed can reduce stress and train your brain to associate reading with sleep. This will make it easier to fall asleep and get better sleep overall.
Tip: Skip reading on your phone or e-reader. Smartphone and tablet screens emit blue light which disrupts your internal clock and negatively impacts your sleep.
Curling up on the couch with a good book is a great way to relax and unwind. And, according to research, it can also be good for your health, your career, and your personal relationships. So, next time you’re looking for something to do, head to your local library and pick up something to get those brainwaves moving! The benefits of reading are nothing to turn a page at.
